Bismil is a large district on the Tigris, east of the Diyarbakır plain, and one of the province's most populous districts. Numerous mounds, such as Aşağı Salat Höyüğü, lie in its surroundings, and its farming depends on the Bismil Plain, irrigated by the Tigris.
