Göle is Ardahan's largest district and holds most of the province's forest cover. Once part of the ancient kingdom of Colchis, it was ceded to Russia in 1878 and returned to Turkey under the 1921 Treaty of Moscow. It is known for its Kaşar Cheese Festival, held since 1995.
