Damal is Ardahan's least populous and most mountainous district, ringed by the peaks of Ilgar Dağı and Keldağ, with winters dropping to -40°C. The 10th-century church in the village of Küçük Damal points to the district's long history, and every year between 15 June and 15 July a silhouette resembling Atatürk appears on the ridges of Karadağ in the early evening.
