Şefaatli lies in south-western Yozgat, with Merkez and Yerköy to its north, Boğazlıyan to its south-east and Kırşehir's Çiçekdağı district to its west. A small village in Ottoman times, it grew after the Ankara–Kars railway came into service; it became a district in 1954. Farming and livestock, especially cattle, sheep and Angora goats, form the basis of its economy.
