Çekerek lies in north-eastern Yozgat, 90 km from the provincial centre, on mountainous terrain, bordered by Kadışehri and Saraykent to the east, Aydıncık and Sorgun to the west, and Tokat's Zile district to the north. Formerly called Hacıköy and attached to Tokat's Zile district, it became an independent district in 1944 and was the scene of the Aynacıoğlu Rebellion during the War of Independence. One of Turkey's larger dams, Çekerek Dam, and 'Lavender Island' with its lavender fields on the reservoir, are in the district.
