Zile Castle is remembered as the place from which the Roman general Julius Caesar wrote to Rome after defeating the Pontic king Pharnaces II at the Battle of Zela in 47 BCE, using the words "Veni, vidi, vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered). Built of rubble and cut stone, the castle has a Roman-period theatre carved into the rock on its northeastern side.
