Türkeli, on the Black Sea coast west of Sinop, on the border with Kastamonu, was formerly called Yarna and then Gemiyanı before taking its current name in 1957. Its harbour, completed in 2001, serves as both a yacht marina and a fishing shelter; chestnut production and forestry are important branches of the district's economy.
