The walls of Sinop Castle were built by Miletian colonists in the 7th century BCE to defend the city. Expanded and strengthened during the Roman and Byzantine periods, the walls were further fortified under the Seljuks after the city was taken by İzzeddin Keykavus I in 1214. The surviving walls are 2,050 metres long and 25 metres high, and were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013.
