Urfa Castle stands on Damlacık Hill above the Balıklıgöl basin, an area also known as a Neolithic settlement dated to around 10,000 BC. The castle has an inner and outer section and has been repaired in various periods through history. The two stone columns on the hill are popularly linked to the legendary catapult said to have thrown the Prophet Abraham into the fire. The 'Urfa Man' statue, estimated at around 12,000 years old and now displayed in the Şanlıurfa Museum, was also found around the castle.
