Alaçam, west of Samsun on the Black Sea coast, takes its name from the large pine trees ('uluçam') along the Uluçay stream, dating to the 14th century. The 61 registered Ottoman Baroque houses from the 1890s in its old market, and the Sivritepe mound and castle, are its historic highlights; Alaçam pide and stuffed bonito are local specialities.
