Ünye Castle (Kaleköy Castle), about 5 km southeast of central Ünye, is built on a steep rock outcrop and dates to the Pontic period, roughly 2,500 years ago. It has tiered walls, corridors, water cisterns and rock tombs, with traces from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods as well. After long restoration it reopened to visitors in 2025, with a rail system installed in one of its rock-cut corridors.
