The Gümüşkesen Tomb Monument stands within the ancient necropolis on the eastern slope of Sodra Mountain in Milas and is dated, from its marble craftsmanship, to the mid-2nd century AD. It was probably built for a high-ranking official of the city and his family; it consists of a burial chamber, a colonnaded middle storey and a stepped pyramid-shaped roof, standing 8.45 metres tall in total. Its overall form has led scholars to see it as a small-scale copy of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
