At Uzuncaburç, about 30 km north of Silifke, Diocaesarea (Uzuncaburç) is one of Mersin's most important and best-preserved ancient sites. A sanctuary of the Olba kingdom in the Hellenistic period, it became an autonomous city named Diocaesarea under Roman Emperor Vespasian in AD 72. Its colonnaded street, theatre, temples and the tall Hellenistic tower that gave the modern village its name ('Uzuncaburç', meaning long tower) still stand.
