According to its inscription, the Zeynel Abidin Mosque was built in 1159, and the complex consists of the mosque, a madrasa and the tombs of Zeynel Abidin and his sister Sitti Zeynep. About 100 metres to the east, the Mor Yakup Church, whose foundations were laid in 313 CE, is counted among the oldest churches in Mesopotamia. The two houses of worship of different faiths stand side by side, and both were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2014.
