Yazıhan, 40 km from Malatya's provincial centre, has Arguvan and Hekimhan to its north, Hekimhan to its west, and Malatya's city centre and Akçadağ district to its south. The area lies on the historic Silk Road route; archaeological finds around Fethiye and Kuruçay point to Late Hittite period settlement. The district gained its present status in 1990.
