Kuluncak, in north-western Malatya, lies in the valley of the Tohma Stream on rugged terrain, with Hekimhan to its east and Darende to its south-west. Once a winter shelter for nomadic herders from the surrounding highlands, the settlement was a sub-district of Darende before becoming a municipality in 1972 and a district in 1990. The district has deposits of thorium, iron, zinc, gold and manganese, along with marble quarries and hot springs.
