The Grand Mosque in Battalgazi (Old Malatya) was built under the Seljuk ruler Alaaddin Keykubat in 1224, and with its four-eyvan plan it is considered Anatolia's only example of the great Seljuk mosques of Iran. An inner courtyard with a garden and pool at its centre forms the basis of the plan. Geometric decoration in turquoise and aubergine-coloured tile mosaics, and the brick-backed tile ornament inside the dome, are the mosque's striking features.
