Karatay Madrasa (Museum of Tile Works)

Built in 1251 by the emir Celâleddin Karatay, the madrasa has a covered courtyard whose interior is lined with mosaic and panel tiles. Its portal, considered a masterpiece of stonework, carries carved inscriptions and Qur'anic verses. Opened in 1955 as the Museum of Tile Works, it displays Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman tiles and ceramics, notably those from the Kubad-Âbâd Palace. Together with similar madrasas in Kayseri, Erzurum, Sivas and Kırşehir, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2014.
