Construction began under Sultan Rükneddin Mesud I and was completed in 1221 under Alâeddin Keykubad I. More than forty reused Roman and Byzantine marble columns support the interior, and its ebony minbar was made in 1155 by Ahlatlı Mengü Berti. Several Seljuk sultans, including Mesud I and Alâeddin Keykubad I, are buried in the tomb in the mosque courtyard.
