The repair workshop, hangar, water tank and warehouse buildings of the historic İzmit railway station have housed the museum since 2007. Its exhibition halls present finds arranged chronologically from the Palaeolithic to the Ottoman period, including material from the Megarian-founded city of Astakos, the Roman period, and underwater surveys carried out off Kerpe in 2020. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by the world's second-largest statue of Herakles.
