Karakeçili lies 35 km from the centre of Kırıkkale. It takes its name from the Karakeçili tribe of the Kayı branch of the Oğuz Turks, who migrated to Anatolia via Gaziantep; it became a municipality in 1957 and a district in 1990. It is known for its annual International Culture Festival.
