The Kars Museum, founded in 1959, has occupied its current building since 1980. Its archaeology hall displays finds chronologically from the Palaeolithic through the Urartian, Roman and Byzantine periods to the Ottoman era, most of them from excavations at the Ani ruins. The ethnography hall holds woven textiles, silver belts and manuscripts from the 18th to 20th centuries, and the museum garden holds animal-shaped gravestones from the Akkoyunlu, Karakoyunlu, Armenian and Georgian periods.
