Ani was an important medieval city on the Silk Road, called the "city of 1001 churches" for its many churches. Walls, the cathedral, the Menüçehr Mosque and churches from different periods are scattered across a wide plateau. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016; the far bank of the Arpaçay is Armenia.
