Digor

Digor, at the eastern end of the Erzurum-Kars plateau near the Armenian border, is bordered by Kars's centre to the west and north and by Kağızman to the south. The volcanic Yağlıca Mountain to its south-west rises to 2,961 metres. Today's town was founded under Russian administration in the 1880s, came under Turkish territory after the 1920 Treaty of Gümrü, and became a district in 1953. The Beşkilise monastery complex and the Tekor Basilica, built around AD 480, are among its historic monuments.
