Büyükada, 5.4 square kilometres in area, lies about 2,300 metres from the Maltepe shore. On Yücetepe, the island's highest hill, stands the sixth-century Church and Monastery of St George, and on İsa Tepesi stand the Church and Monastery of Christ. There is no motor traffic on the island; it is explored by bicycle, electric vehicle or on foot.
