The first fortifications in Erzurum date back to the 18th-century Ottoman-Persian wars, but the largest were built from the early 19th century onward against Russian raids. Around 21 of these strategic structures were built on the high hills surrounding the city, including headquarters buildings, barracks, training grounds and cisterns. The best known are the Mecidiye and Aziziye fortifications east of the city.
