Karayazı, in eastern Erzurum, lies 120 km from the provincial centre at an elevation of 2,287 metres. Formerly known as Bayraktar, the settlement was founded by the Seljuk vanguard leader Bayraktar Han after the 1071 victory at Manzikert and gained district status in 1938. The Cunni Cave, the Söylemez Baba Tomb and the Gola Plateau are among the district's sights.
