Kovancılar, in northern Elazığ on the Bingöl-Elazığ highway, is a district built on a flat, wide plain. It was founded in 1934 when Turkish families migrating from Romania were settled there, gained municipal status in 1968 and district status in 1987. Sugar beet, sunflower, cotton, tomato and pepper growing are widespread.
