Begun under Murad II and completed by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1475, Edirne Palace was the Ottoman sultans' second palace for centuries, reaching its most splendid period under Mehmed IV. Largely destroyed in the 1877-78 Ottoman-Russian War, only limited remains of the palace can be seen today. Since 1924, Sarayiçi has also hosted the Kırkpınar oil-wrestling tournament.
