Sungurlu, on the highway linking Çorum to Ankara, is one of the province's largest districts; it takes its name from the Seljuk lord Sungur Bey, who had the Ulu Mosque built. It is known for its proximity to the Hittite capital Hattusa and the Alacahöyük site; its area shrank when Boğazkale became a separate district in 1987.
