Yapraklı lies 30 km from central Çankırı, at an elevation of 1,204 m, made up of 38 villages and 6 neighbourhoods, with Ilgaz to its north, Çankırı's central district to its south-west and Kızılırmak district to its east. It became a municipality in 1955 and a district in 1958; its population has fallen from 21,000 in 1960 to around 8,000 today.
