Atkaracalar lies 70-105 km from central Çankırı, in the Black Sea Region, bordered by Kurşunlu to the east, Çerkeş to the west, Bayramören to the north-east and Orta to the south. The shrine of Hamza Sultan, near Dumanlı Mountain, is the district's well-known place of visit; it became a district in 1987.
