Osman Gazi (1258-1324), founder of the Ottoman state, was buried, at his own wish, in a tomb built after the conquest of Bursa over the chapel of the Byzantine Sainte Elie Monastery; the present building was rebuilt in 1863 by Sultan Abdülaziz after a fire in 1801 and the 1855 earthquake destroyed the earlier structure. Opposite it stands the tomb of his son Orhan Gazi (1281-1362), the second Ottoman sultan, built over another part of the same monastery. Both tombs also hold the cenotaphs of family members.
