Built on a small peninsula formed by two hills, Gölyazı stands on the remains of the ancient city of Apollonia ad Rhyndacum; necropolis traces and stone column fragments can be seen around the village. Known for its stone houses, the village still has active fishing on Lake Uluabat, notably by its women fishers.
