Built as a church in the Byzantine period and known to have hosted the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, the building was converted into a mosque under Orhan Gazi. It has been repaired at different times and is still used as a mosque today; Byzantine-period wall paintings and mosaic remains can be seen inside.
