Karesi, on the edge of the Balıkesir plain, was created in 2012 when the old central district of Balıkesir was split in two. Historic buildings such as the Zağnos Paşa Mosque, the Yıldırım Bayezid Complex and the Balıkesir Clock Tower lie within it; the district takes its name from the Karesi principality founded here in the 13th century.
