Yeni Kale stands in Kocahisar village (old Kahta) in Kahta district. First built in Hittite times, it took its present form under the Mamluks and continued in use under the Ottomans; over the centuries it passed to the Urartians, Parthians, Commagene kingdom, Rome, the Sasanians and Arab armies. Mamluk-era inscriptions survive at the gate, the mosque and the palace entrance, and the castle contains a mosque, a dungeon, a dovecote tower, cisterns and a hidden water channel down to the Kahta stream.
