Gerger Castle stands on a sheer rock in Oymaklı village in Adıyaman; its history goes back to the Late Hittite principalities, and the earlier city of Gerger is known to have been founded in the 3rd century BCE under the Seleucid king Arsames. On the face of a large rock is a roughly four-metre-high relief of the Commagene king Samos (140-100 BCE) with Greek inscriptions. Inside the castle, remains of a mosque, shops and cisterns survive from the Mamluk, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
